Why is a post-travel consultation important?
A post-travel consultation with your travel physician is essential, especially if you spent at least 3 months in a rural area or a developing country, if you might be experiencing symptoms of malaria, or if you were treated or admitted to a hospital for an illness during your travels.
While most of these conditions upon return are mild, up to 8% of travelers are ill enough to seek care. Some patients do not experience symptoms of any illness until they arrive back at home. Though many post-travel infections become obvious soon after arrival, the incubation periods vary and some diseases can present themselves months or even years after initial infection.

Who should prioritize scheduling a post-travel consultation?
Aside from those who wish to ensure that they are clear of any medical condition related to their trip, it is especially important for travelers to see a physician should they meet any of the following conditions: 
- They are “at risk” for health issues due to the nature of their travel, such as those living abroad for more than 3 months, frequent travelers, returning expatriates, and etc.
- They believe they may have been exposed to health risks that may lead to problems later in life or possibly transmissible to others around them.
- They had been ill or treated for a sickness abroad and now want reassurance that they have fully recovered. This is very important for those who have had dengue, as re-exposure comes with much more severe effects.
