“Climb high, sleep low.”

Altitude illness occurs during ascent, not descent. The simplest way to avoid or reduce symptoms is to ascend slowly to give your body enough time to become accustomed to changes in oxygen concentration.

If your itinerary doesn’t allow gradual ascent, speak with your travel physician about medicine that can prevent altitude illness. You should also familiarize yourself with symptoms of altitude sickness so that you can take necessary measures to prevent the illness from escalating. Many high-altitude areas lack quick access to medical attention, so prevention is better than falling ill and requiring emergency care.

Symptoms of altitude sickness are similar to those of a hangover: feeling lethargic, headaches, lack of appetite, vomiting, and nausea. Mild cases may be treated according to their symptoms, such as taking painkillers for headaches. People with altitude sickness should refrain from ascending further until they have gotten used to their current altitude. More importantly, those with worsening symptoms while resting at the same altitude must descend immediately or risk serious effects to their health.
